The Best of the Bronx Part II

INTRODUCTION
By Sigmund Balka

It is with distinct pleasure that we present this exhibit of talented work by artists currently living and working in the Bronx. We were pleased to present the “Best of the Bronx Part I” exhibition last year and then subsequently were delighted that an additional number of artists who had not been included in the first exhibition were discovered and had every reason to be included in Part II of our survey. The Bronx has become a focal point for artistic life in the New York area with its economic demands upon the lives of creative people in the arts who must deal with the same issues we must confront on where to find affordable housing to live and work. Some artists from Manhattan have successfully explored living as far away as the East Oak Lane area of Philadelphia, as well as the Bethlehem-Allentown-Easton area of Pennsylvania in order to be economically solvent. Additionally, artists have come from all over the world to develop their careers in New York and for similar reasons have settled in the Bronx. As an example, the Hunts Point area now has a growing number of artists studios with dedicated individuals working there and representing former locations as far removed as Italy and India, two of the homelands of artists in this exhibition.

It is appropriate to acknowledge the cooperation of Charles Krasne, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Krasdale Foods, for his support of the Krasdale Galleries and these exhibitions, as well as all the Krasdale employees for their eager cooperation in helping to make these exhibits a reality. I would also like to thank Vanessa Silberman for the preparation of the catalog entries.
